The course introduces students to sociolinguistic approaches to intercultural communication. Sociolinguistics examines language as a social practice, focusing on its role in constructing various social identities (gender, age, nationality, ethnicity). In this context, we deal with constructionist and critical discourse analytic approaches, which see identities as social actions that are shaped through discourse (language, other semiotic systems) in specific contexts, drawing on examples from intercultural communicative settings. Emphasis will be given on the ways in which national and ethnic identities are constructed in various aspects of public discourse (e.g. news media, television fiction, advertising), with the aim to critically examine ethnocultural stereotypes for the promotion of intercultural awareness.

Ιn the modern ever changing world, it is important to realize the formation of the image of the "other" and the "self", as it takes place through different aspects of human interaction, such as tradition, literature, arts, religion, and so on. Given the recent social developments, such as immigration, the rise of the far right, Covid isolation, poverty and ecological disaster, cultural practices like literature and art respond dynamically outside ethnocentric stereotypes and the central narrative and put at the center of the discussion new dynamic and pluralistic anthropocentric views of the social model. The aim of the course is to acquire intercultural and interdisciplinary literacy, in order to meet the new challenges as they have developed in today's societies with internationalized and multilingual work environments, which have made multilevel communication skills essential for collaborations worldwide. The course is structured by means of a theoretical introduction, which will first clarify the theoretical framework under which cultural practices are currently examined, and relevant concepts, such as deterritorialization, immigration studies, hybrid forms, interculturalism, identity construction, crypro-colonialism and post-colonial studies, will be explored.

The main body of the course deals with primary texts from literature and artσ, as well as with basic periods of cultural history, where special issues are highlighted. Examples from the 20th century to the present: The German occupation and the extermination of the Jews, the history of immigration in the 1950s and 1960s, the current absorption of the academic proletariat in northern Europe, the economic crisis in literature, tourism and crypto-colonialism, theater and the refugees etc.

The aim of the course is to use texts as a basis
a) for the deconstruction of stereotypes,
b) for the redefinition of identities and intercultural relations,
c) for the understanding and acceptance of cultural diversity and finally
d) for the reduction of literature to a universal tool of applied democracy.

The aim of the course is to introduce students to the fundementals of translation and interpretation and familiarize them with these concepts on both theoretical and practical terms. The course addresses and analyzes issues related to the complex field of intercultural education, focusing on basic pedagogical directions from a holistic, intercultural and inclusive perspective, as identified in the relevant Greek and international literature. The aim of this course is to familiarize postgraduate students with issues related to language learning and (intercultural) communication strategies. First, conceptual clarifications are made and various typologies of strategies are presented, which are related to productive and receptive writing skills. Next, reference is made to theories and typologies of communication strategies, with a focus on intercultural communication strategies in the contemporary globalized world, and models for the development of intercultural communication skills are presented. Issues of educational management of the strategies are raised, various models for teaching and developing the strategies are presented, and a framework for cultivating intercultural communication strategies is proposed. Suggestions are made for applications to a second / foreign language teaching context and alternative approaches for language strategies asssesment are presented.

The course introduces students to the key concepts, methodological tools and discussions in intercultural psychology, which explores how human behaviors are defined, change and are performed in different cultural contexts. Special emphasis is given to the connection between culture and identity as well as to the literature that examines the conditions and consequences of intercultural contact. The dilemmas that have historically been associated with "multiculturalism" and the different approaches to intercultural coexistence are discussed. Finally, the models of acculturation are presented and their limitations are discussed in the light of contemporary migration and refugee flows. The aim of the course is to present sociolinguistic aspects of bilingualism/multilingualism and of its educational implications. The centripetal role of education is discussed, which promotes a specific linguistic code, the "standard variety", competing with the linguistic codes brought by many students from home. Linguistic discriminations are examined at school. The concept of bilingualism/multilingualism is considered to be an important factor of linguistic heterogeneity in modern (Greek) school. Furthermore, the main types of bilingualism are presented. Finally, we discuss the widespread views, attitudes and ideologies in society in general and in the educational community in particular (teachers, parents, students) on bilingualism, linking them to the broader sociolinguistic phenomena of linguistic attitudes and ideologies.Particular emphasis is given on the distinction between folk (arising in immigrant settings) and elite bilingualism (associated with the learning of prestigious European languages ​​such as German) and the language attitudes associated with these types of bilingualism.

This course deals with second / foreign language acquisition in the light of intercultural communication, with emphasis on the typology of the languages ​​involved. The subject of the course is translation as intercultural mediation. Basic translation procedures applied for the translation of cultural words (explicitation, modulation, adaptation, borrowing, etc.) are presented theoretically and applied in practice during the course. The subject of the course is Russian culture and its evolution, with emphasis on the post-Soviet / contemporary era. An integral part of the course will be the acquaintance of postgraduate students with the multinational / multicultural space of modern Russia, in order to develop the necessary knowledge and communication skills, not only with Russians, but also with other ethnic groups of people from different cultural contexts. Linguistic and cultural aspects will be examined in a multimodal way: on the one  hand, examples will be drawn from commercial and economic relations between Russia and Greece (like mass tourism and alternative forms of tourism or other modern forms of business communication) and, on the other hand, aspects of contemporary Russian cultural life (such as literary texts, music, cinema, etc.) will be presented. Knowledge of Russian is not necessary, but an introduction will be made to the way Russian-speaking people communicate for the needs of the course.

The term mediation is defined as an activity in which the foreign language speaker is required to act as mediator in communicative situations for people who cannot communicate directly with each other, as they are speakers of different languages. During the course, students are expected to analyze the role of mediation and the mediator in the foreign language course, to get to know the types of mediation, as defined in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and the Unified Curriculum for Foreign Languages, as well as to get acquainted with the various mediation strategies and their development.
